“These Boots” is one of the first times that I had the pleasure of working with Selkie. The shoot is an old one that has just been passed over for awhile. I’m glad that it has finally seen the light of day. Selkie really loved her boots and wanted to do a shoot a with them. So I created a pretty straight glamour set and we shot away. I think the set is fun and pretty hot at times. Selkie somehow manages to pull that off in just about every shoot she does.

As a quick aside pictures 59 and 60 in the set are pretty stunning in my opinion. The pure statuesque beauty there really stands out. Those shots remind me of a short story I read by Neil Gaiman where a guy (over the course of many years) is pursuing this woman who doesn’t seem to age and appears every so often in men’s magazines, sometimes under a diffeent name but it’s the same girl… and she’s always nineteen. He eventually becomes a photographer and gets to photograph her and then she disappears. He reflects that she’s “in all places, all times, sliding through our fantasies, a girl forever.” When I look at those two photos it’s easy to see her modeling for a sculptor in ancient Greece, or a painting in 18th century France, and being photographed today. Timeless.

For those interested the short story is called “Looking for the Girl”

Yet another set from our shoot at the Conservatory in Oklahoma City. I was dying to do a bar shoot and I couldn’t get two better models to play the parts here.

Selkie turns in a tour de force, with the acrobatics at the beginning and the seduction at the end. Vanity looks almost, dare I say… submissive, in these shots. Both models turn up the heat by the finale.

I lit the set to look like a typical bar and concentrated on doing a sequential set that tells the story of a very motivated bar patron. This is a combination of straight glamour that hopefully also looks like a reality shoot.

As Garth Marenghi says… Enjoy.

Yet another set that we did at the Conservatory in Oklahoma City.

The background guided the concept behind this shoot. It looked like a window in New Orleans to me. I lit it with that intense yellow and orange light to suggest that the sun was coming up in the morning (I never get too far away from my filmmaking roots). I coupled that with a soft light to the front.

Selkie and Dame Lebeau had just met each other but you’d never know it from these photos, which demonstrates their professionalism. Both models had an extensive dance background that unified them and I took full advantage of. This set succeeds on such a high level because of the dance background they share.

Perfect models, perfect location, perfect lighting make for very good photos. One photo from this particular set was part of the IAO Gallery’s 2008 Biting the Apple Show and it sold too!

I can imagine that both Lebeau and Selkie are going to be miffed that this set didn’t appear AROUND Mardi Gras, but as the cajuns say… c’est la vie.

Personally, I loved working with Selkie. This was the first time I had the chance to model with a live person. lol…and Selkie is just so gorgeous I couldn’t help but to feel nervous around her.

It gets pretty warm under those modeling lights and being that close to the lovely TG Selkie…I have to admit I did sweat…well, just a little.

- Toxic Goddess Dame Lebeau

This shoot was a lot of fun (you can never go wrong with the magnificent Dame LeBeau) and beautifully artistic. I am a huge fan of hers so it was an honor to work with her.

It gave me something to brag about when I got home! ;-) If you aren’t a fan of hers, too… well, just have a look. You will be.

This one is rated as one of my favorite shoots.

This update is a little different, in that, it was initially shot to promote our (then) new t-shirts. What you see is the aftermath of our promo shoot. Selkie is always wanting to get the most out of a shoot. In this case it meant that after we had gotten our promo shots, she started stripping out of the new t-shirt.

Selkie has a playful and wonderous personality. Sometimes I think that gets lost a little when we are shooting updates for the site. The silly and crazy shots get set aside when you’re editing because they don’t always fit the mood of the set. However in this case, there’s no overriding concept and it’s nice to just let her play. So this set is a bit more candid and fun but still sexy and teasing. Hope you enjoy.

Robert and I worked for an hour trying to figure out how to light this set. I really wanted something that looked ancient and torch-lit without doing anything in Photoshop. I think the time we spent setting this up paid off, because there is absolutely no manipulation on the look of these shots. This is what it looked like when I pulled the trigger.

Selkie had a great medieval dress and a friend with a metal suit of armor and a great tapestry (not to mention a very cool sword), so the concept was fairly simple. We talked a bit about this being late at night and her sneaking into this room, but what I got was something pretty amazing.

Selkie basically came up with a whole storyline on the spot and if you watch her face, she goes through the whole range of sorrow, happiness, lust, confusion, contenment and maybe a little craziness! After we shot this set, which is almost like still photos of a play, Selkie wrote the story you can read below. However, as an artist, I ask that you take a look at the photos first… then read her story. I think everything you need to know is right there in the shots.

Selkie really shows some brilliance here. I think this shoot is a good example of what seperates our work from rest of the crowd out there.

There was a handmaiden that was used to being anonymous and trod upon. One day her duties took her to wait upon one of the knights of the castle. He was kind enough to inquire after her name, kinder still to remember it, and even more amazing: he used it, and treated her kindly.

The handmaiden quickly became enamored with the knight, paying extra care when she waited on him. One day, he rode out to defend the stronghold. His body returned in the back of a cart, and to honor his sacrifice, his armor was put on display. The maid went back to being nameless.

She attempted to return to the normal routine of being ordered around and ignored, shouted at and forgotten, but it was difficult. She missed him so terribly that she stole one of his short swords and hid it away in her quarters, but the blade served only to exacerbate things. Sleeping with it beside her, she couldn’t forget for even a moment.

Distraught nearly to madness, she sneaks into the halls one night, lights the torches, and tries to return the sword. She finds that she cannot let go of it, nor leave the side of her ‘beloved’. Knowing that being caught would bring dire consequences but too crazed to care (much), she begins to pretend that-for just a while-he is actually there and all class separations have gone. She plays at wooing him, and for a while even forgets that the armor is empty as she flirts and jokes with it, stroking its cheek, trying to tantalize and tease it.

All good things come to an end. Eventually she remembers that he is gone and slips into nostalgia… only to be rudely awakened by the sound of footsteps in the corridor. So as not to be caught, she flees – in such a hurry that she forgets to take her clothes, leaving them there for the footsteps to find!

This set came about because one of our biggest supporters, Jerry, invited us to shoot at his hot tub (yes, if you’ve got a unique location, Toxic Goddess will come to you). Once we got the idea of what the location looked like, I pretty much gave Jennifer Marks carte blanche on the makeup. I chose a cinematic “fire and ice” lighting set up.

The makeup works brilliantly with this set because it’s already messed up before we even started shooting! As the water made that eye makeup run, it just continued to look like the original design.

The outfit and makeup inspired Selkie to give me a combination of moody/goofy/sultry/flirtatious looks which reminds me a lot of The Joker (make a mental note: Selkie as The Joker).

All of this comes together as a highly unusual glamour shoot, with moments of high art when she moves entirely into the water. In fact, I can back up that statement by mentioning that a photo from this set is running right this moment in the Dirty Show in Detroit Michigan!

We had to re-conceive this shoot several times to get this set. I’ll try to do the original idea next year. However, I should add that I think this is much better than the first vision. I’m extremely pleased with the final cut here.

I tend to do a lot of funky concepts with Selkie, because she’s good at pulling them off, and she actually enjoys them! To be fair though, she’s exceptionally good at straight glamour shoots and I really owed her one of these. Occasionally, I’ll fight my inclination to put her in water or make her wear prosthetics and just let her be pretty (occasionally).

I think this set is portfolio-worthy. Thanks to Rob and Phil for their help in pulling this off.

This Christmas shoot is the shoot which I began to think would never happen. We had all sorts of problems at first – it got rescheduled over and over and we even had to change the whole concept due to some of this. But we made it at last, and it looks like we meant to do it all along. Yes… we MEANT to do that.

It was certainly in the spirit with the new year coming in as we spent much of the time discussing where we hope to take Toxic Goddess this upcoming year – making lovely plots, dreams and schemes and getting all excited. You can decide from looking at the photos whether or not I also got ‘hot and bothered’.

Dirk, it turns out, is actually quite good at dressing me, as he brought the wardrobe (complete with man-buying-lingerie stories). The wardrobe and the kitty turned out to be one of my Christmas gifts.

I am having a naming issue with the tiger, you see. He struck me as a Leonard, but I can’t give him the name of a friend of mine. So then he became Wilfred, Santa Claws, King George, Battle Cat, Hamlet, and Samuel L. Jackson. Whatever his name is, he can do a mean salsa and swing dance but he isn’t that good at the waltz.

I am hearby opening up a name-my-tiger contest. Come up with a great tiger name before I do, and I may just have to come up with a prize for you – at the very least, I’ll sign, kiss, and mail you a nice holiday card.

(Dirk’s note: This contest is over now… super sorry.)

This was shot on the first night I worked with Selkie. It’s a straight glamour shoot and one of the few times that I’ve done something with her where I just let her be pretty. She’s happy to indulge my own weird proclivities (see the Poison Elf series), so I take advantage of that, but never forget she’s also an excellent glamour model too.

I love this shoot. Selkie and I were wrapping up a fantasty shoot with her in elf ears that we shot outdoors. When we got back we wanted to get another shoot in, and since I’m a big geek, I asked her to keep the elf ears. We decided to punk her out and I really like what we got here.

Selkie did a magnificent job on this shoot. I told her to just bring all the attitude she had and she certainly delivered!

We’re going to do another set with this “character” soon and I can’t wait to see what we get!
