I’ve run several sets that were shot close to this kitchen already. Selkie and I knew that we wanted to do a shoot with this oven as soon as we saw it, but we wanted it to be done right. When I found out that the old oven was on its last legs we set up this shoot immediately. I mean, come on… look at that thing! It’s like finding the Ark of the Covenant!

In high-end photography there is a person called the Art Director, who works on all the costumes and set design and makeup to create a cohesive look. In this set Selkie was the Art Director. It was her kitchen, with all the extra special touches, she picked out the dress and the apron, plus did her own hair and makeup. The pearls were a nice touch too.

I chose a lighting set-up that would allow me to get an antique look and pumped some yellow light into the ceiling to age the set. The final touch was to desaturate the photos so they looked 60 years old. I think the final look of these photos are a suitable homage to the era that oven was created.

You’ll have to excuse my occassional shots of the stove and the kitchen. Those photos are for Selkie and me. If you like still life shots, then they’re for you too!

Once again, Selkie shows that she’s adept at telling a story through her expressions. I’ll also add that she really made tea and chocolate chip cookies while we shot this set… AND they were both excellent.

Art Director, model and chef… not bad for one evening!
